The Wado Ryu style identifies it selves through the combination of Ju Jutsu and karate. The founder Hironori Othsuka was a master in Shindo Yoshin Ryu Ju Jutsu. This style uses the power of the opponent to defend ourselves. This is also a characteristic of Wado Ryu.

Hironori Othsuka began in 1921 with Shotokan karate. The training in that time existed only of basic and kata trainings. Hironori Othsuka found this in conflict with Budo. He missed the kumite (man to man fight). He was used to this way of practising on his Ju Jutsu background and he developed his own style. The Wado Ryu that nowadays can be seen at most sport schools, exists mostly of competition karate. The Ju Jutsu cannot be recognized anymore. At our club, this traditional karate form is still being practised. The Ju Jutsu has a prominent place during the lessons and is therefore also examined with karate at the same time.

Why karate: the keywords are self-control, perseverance and alertness.

Karate is a sport that contributes to the health; muscles are strengthened and self-confidence rises. Especially by the youth has the practising of the sport a positive influence on the locomotion. Even so it is emphasized that a karateka will never seek or begin a conflict. In the Wado Ryu they place control opposite to violation, and technique opposite to power. To reach this, an iron self-discipline is necessary and demands years of practise.

Wado Ryu is being taught by Wim H. Vellema,
2nd Dan Wado Ryu and national recognized karate teacher.
