Judo is a Japanese self defence sport. This sport has, at the end of the 19th Century, been invented by the Japanese Jigoro Kano. Sensei (teacher) Kano developed judo from the sport ju-jitsu. Ju-jitsu is also a self defence sport, but this sport has already been practised since the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century.

Sensei Kano was a ju-jitsu pupil. He got good points at different ju-jitsu schools during that time (there were about 700 schools in that time). He made a combination of the different techniques he learnt and named it Judo.

Judo means “the way of softness/simplicity”

The first form of judo was almost similar to ju-jitsu, like clothing, techniques and philosophy. It is practised as a self defence sport. In 1882 the first judo school (Dojo) was opened: Kodokan. This dojo was established in Tokyo and started with 9 pupils. Judo was introduced into the United States of America in 1903, when a club was opened in Seattle. President Theodore Roosevelt, was one of the first American judo pupils and one of the first American judo participants that got a black belt (1st dan). He even had a special room in “the white house”, where he could practise judo. The popularity of judo as a sport travelled fast across the world and competitions on national and international level were organised. Many factors that normally needs to be taking into consideration by self defence sport, such as tallness, age and weight, do not really play an important role by judo.
Sensei Kano was a good example of that, because he was small and thin. But he had more power than someone who was the opposite of him, because of his excellent technique. Age is also a factor that not needs to be taken into account, there Sensei Kano practised judo till his death (he deceased at 78).

When our judoka’s want to and have discussed this with their teacher, they can come to our competition training. Regularly there is the possibility to train with pupils from other clubs. When the judoka’s have a good practical level, they can compete in competitions. Firstly this will be at club tournaments, later at bigger tournaments and championships. A lot of our judoka’s have reached the level of section- and region/districts championships. The Sport & Judoclub even has a competition secretary, which you can easily reach. If you have any questions for our competition secretary, just sent an e-mail to:

You will always receive an answer!
